Roof Washing
• You may ask yourself, "What are those Black Streaks on my roof?" The question should really be... "What is that Growing on my roof & Eating my shingles?"

• All of that ugly staining is actually organic growth on your roof. In South Jersey we have 3 main culprits; they are algae, lichen, and moss. Virtually all roof stains are organic matter in various stages of growth & decay. The black roof streaks you see are actually an algae, called Gloeocapsa Magma. The roofing manufacturers reformulated asphalt shingles in the late 1980s, removing some asphalt & replacing it with crushed limestone. The limestone is the food source for the algae. In most cases on a north or east facing roof. This provides the ideal moist environment for algae growth. 

-Lichen is a fungus and appears as white/green/brown in color, they look like lilly pads and range in size.

-Moss appears as a green fuzzy mass.

If left untreated, the these culprits will reduce the life of your roof, diminish your home's curb appeal, and increase your home cooling cost.

High pressure cleaning equipment, even the little electric pressure washers you can pick up at a hardware store, WILL damage the shingles by removing the granules. If pointed in the wrong direction, they will push the water up under the shingles & cause even greater damage by lifting the shingles & letting water get to the material under them. The granules provide a nice variety or colors for curb appeal & also help with keeping the roof cool. Any type of pressure washer should NEVER be used to clean asphalt shingles

• How we clean your roof: We apply our Soft Wash Roof Cleaning solution that contains an algaecide, fungicide, a mild soap via our Soft Wash methods, allow some time for these cleaners to work then we rinse the roof clean with plain water. This will help to increase the life of your shingles & return the curb appeal to your home

The roof above was "cleaned" by the home owner using high pressure equipment & without a cleaning solution. The Algae has NOT been removed but many of the granules have been. The damage is permanent & cannot be undone. The life of these shingles has been greatly reduced because of high pressure equipment in inexperienced hands.

This home had Nasty Black Streaks all over it. As in all of our Roof Washing, we used our Soft Wash Techniques with less pressure then you get from a garden hose. As you can see, the Roof is spotless & the beauty has been returned to this Jersey Shore Home
This home has Lichen growing on it & Gloeocapsa Magma (Black Streaks). The Lichen is the green (it looks white in the picture on the left) on the upper left hand side the the Roof. After the Soft Wash, the Lichen is dead and turns white, notice the Black Streaks are gone. The root system of the Lichen goes deep into the shingles and therefore it will take aprox. 4 weeks to rot and blow away. If your Roof is under an umbrella of trees, as many are here in south NJ, it should be treated every year for Lichen to prevent it from becoming this bad.

This Home shows dramatic results. The Algae (black Streaks) were pretty bad but it cleaned up very nice, almost like new. On all our Roof Washing jobs we use less pressure then you get from the garden hose but with our custom Roof Washing Solution the Black Streaks, Algae, Mold, Mildew & Lichen don't stand a chance.
